What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based approach rooted in attachment science and the understanding that human beings are wired for connection.
Rather than focusing only on symptoms or behaviours, EFT helps individuals and couples understand the emotions, needs, and relationship patterns that shape their experiences.
When we experience emotional pain, relationship distress, or insecurity, we often develop protective strategies to cope. Some people become critical or reactive. Others withdraw, avoid vulnerability, over-function, people-please, or shut down emotionally.
These responses often make sense when viewed through the lens of attachment and emotional safety.
EFT helps bring awareness to these patterns, understand what drives them, and create new ways of responding that support greater connection, confidence, and emotional well-being.
Emotionally Focused Therapy can be used with both individuals and couples and is recognized as one of the most effective approaches for strengthening relationships and supporting emotional healing.
Why Emotionally Focused Therapy?
Many of the challenges we experience in life and relationships aren't simply communication problems, stress problems, or emotional problems.
They're connection problems.
We all need to feel seen, understood, valued, and emotionally safe. When those needs aren't met, we can find ourselves caught in patterns of anxiety, conflict, self-criticism, emotional withdrawal, people-pleasing, or disconnection.
You may notice yourself:
Repeating the same arguments with your partner.
Feeling misunderstood or alone in your relationships.
Struggling with anxiety, overwhelm, or emotional reactivity.
Avoiding difficult conversations or shutting down during conflict.
Feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve you.
Longing for deeper connection with yourself or others.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) helps uncover the emotional patterns beneath these struggles and creates opportunities for meaningful, lasting change.
